Financed by Bertha Benz’s dowry, Karl Benz invented and patented the first gas-powered automobile in 1886—the Benz Patent Motorwagen. In 1926, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler merged their automaking companies, and they began operating under “Daimler-Benz.” In June of that same year, the company started releasing the first Mercedes-Benz branded vehicles for purchase.
